Cimitero

Elisabeth Wörndl
Installation consisting of 65 colour prints, 21 x 30 cm, 2011

Elisabeth Wörndl's Cimitero is a photo installation detailing the cemetery of San Michele, Venice, by combining exposures of portraits of the dead, tomb inscriptions, plastic flowers, garden views, tree, and microscopic views of dust from walls of tombs and crypts. The portraits depict people from different times, from the beginning of the 19th century to those who died recently. They are documents of cultural development and provide information about identity, and professional or social positions. Elisabeth Wörndl suggests that cemeteries represent places in which reality is symbolised by the ritual of the funeral and by the culture of remembrance.
